AMD Expected to Surpass Intel in Chip Sales Revenue

AMD has predicted it will bring in more revenue than rival Intel in its upcoming quarter. If the prediction holds true, it will mark the first time AMD becomes the dominant vendor whose primary product is x86 computer processors.

The milestone follows AMD’s third-quarter financial results for 2026, which showed a 45 percent increase in year-over-year revenue to $13.4 billion. During that same period, AMD's Data Center segment generated $8.5 billion, representing a 97 percent jump from the previous year.

While Intel prepares for its next quarter with projected revenue between $15 billion and $16 billion—representing almost no growth—AMD told investors it expects to pull in around $17 billion. Intel would still maintain higher overall revenue because of its manufacturing factory operations, but AMD would take the lead in earnings specifically from selling chips.

AMD chief executive Lisa Su expressed strong confidence in future growth during the company's earnings call. Su stated that the company expects overall growth of greater than 80 percent in 2027, with data center computer processor business roughly doubling and data center artificial intelligence business more than doubling.

To support that expansion, Su noted that AMD has worked across its supply chain to secure essential parts like silicon wafers, substrates, advanced packaging, and memory. The company is also deepening partnerships and investing alongside suppliers to guarantee the long-term capacity required for future growth.

Summary

AMD's surging revenue in its data center and client segments points to a major shift in the computer chip industry. If projections hold, AMD is poised to surpass its historic rival Intel in pure chip sales revenue for the first time.
